Family and Consumer Science prepares youth for competence in the family as well as for occupations based on consumer skills. The philosophy of the family and consumer sciences department is founded on the belief that the ability to reason, to think critically and creatively, and to reflect on one's actions will empower students to act responsibly toward themselves, their families, their peers, and their community.

Classes offered by the consumer sciences department are designed to help adolescents live in a society of constant change and to improve the quality of life as family membersm consumers, home managers, and wage earners. Competence in the work of the family requires knowledge and skills in the areas of personal, child, and family development: textiles and clothing, nutrition and foods, housing and living environments, and consumer and resource management. Learning activities are designed to help students apply their decision-making skills and manageent skills to the world around them, in terms of what they buy, what they eat, how they dress, and where they live.

Students in the family and consumer sciences department have an opportunity to participate in Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). This organization promotes personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences education.

The ultimate aim of family and consumer sciences is to improve the quality of the individual, home, and family life. We believe that the family represents our greatest national strength.
