Students must earn 1.50 PE/Health credits to graduate from WGHS. Of those, .50 credit must be in Health. All PE & Health classes are Co-Ed.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES

The course offers a variety of activities over the course of a semester. Individual as well as team activities will be covered. Possible activities that may be offered are basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, team handball, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, and net games. The Physical Fitness Test will be administered in this class.
H6525S1 & H6525S2 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 11-12

Open to Grades: 11-12
The course is designed for 11th and 12th grade students to cover the more advanced skills and rules used in competition in the various sports offered in our extracurricular program. Team strategy and practical application of all rules will also be covered. Possible activities that may be offered are: basketball, flag football, badminton, soccer, softball, team handball, tennis, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, rock climbing, orienteering, and geocaching. The Physical Fitness Test will be administered in this class.

This course is designed to offer specific instruction on muscular development and increased body flexibility. Students who choose this course must be prepared to participate in a daily exercise program, circuit training, and a daily running regimen. Class size is limited. The Physical Fitness Test will be administered in this class.

This course is designed to offer specific instruction on muscular development and increased body flexibility. Students who choose this course must be prepared to participate in a daily exercise program, circuit training, and a daily running regimen. Since much of the assigned activity will be individualized to meet the students’ needs, the class size is limited. The Physical Fitness Test will be administered in this class.
Note: Weight Training may be repeated for additional credit.
H6860S1 & H6860S2 KINETIC WELLNESS

This class is designed to use and try different means of stress management, reduction, and coping mechanisms. There is a movement base to it including multiple opportunities and ways to find a movement or exercise that can help minimize the consequences stress can have on the body. There are also other ways to explore what works best for you, as a student, to add in healthy behaviors, habits, and actions to reap the physiological benefits of stress management. The goal of this class is to enhance total wellness using physical activity and other activities that have been proven to contribute to overall wellness. There will be an emphasis on self-exploration and trial and error when approaching the content in the course.

Personal Fitness is a class designed to challenge and grow each student in their own individual fitness level. Students will be given the tools and knowledge to assist in managing a fitness-based healthy lifestyle outside of typical sports and recreational play. Students will focus on the 4 Fitness Components (Cardiovascular, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, and Flexibility), as well as setting goals to achieve personal fitness outcomes of their choice. Students should be prepared to challenge themselves in a variety of areas to seek health, confidence, and accomplishment.
H6805 INTRODUCTION TO DANCE & FITNESS

This course will be an introduction to several types of dance and specialized movement training. This course is an introduction and survey of a variety of dance forms and its benefits to your overall health. Activities include yoga, barre, ballet, jazz, social dances, hip hop, zumba, and cultural dance. Students will experience dance through participation exercises, performances, and research. Students will cultivate dance as a visual performing artform that benefits social, emotional, and physical health.
H6825S1 & H6825S2 LIFETIME FITNESS

This class will provide high school students of all abilities and interests with the skills they need to achieve lifetime fitness by exploring diverse fitness topics. Topics will include safe exercise and injury prevention, team sports and team-building, stress management, and cooperatively learning lifelong fitness activities. Students will set realistic individual fitness goals based on their current fitness levels. Students will understand the importance of physical fitness for all ages and abilities and participate in team building exercises. Students will recognize common exercise-related physical injuries, and list guidelines for preventing injuries during physical activity. Students will identify individual and team sports that achieve health-related fitness goals both inside and outside of school. Students will be able to describe how people react to stress physically, emotionally, and behaviorally. Activities include rock climbing, aerobics, flexibility and relaxation training, geocaching, pickleball, badminton, backpacking, injury prevention, golf, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and soccer.
H6715S1 & H6715S2 ADVANCED WEIGHT TRAINING

In this course, students will develop skills and learn the latest techniques in strength training and athletic conditioning. Students will spend a significant amount of time in the weight room perfecting techniques on such exercises as bench press, power clean, squat, and others designed to make the student a better athlete. Students will also spend an extended amount of time outside the weight room working on plyometrics, sprinting techniques, distance running, and agility. Students will be expected to demonstrate a high level of muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility. This course is intense; it should not be taken by students who are simply wanting to fulfill the graduation requirement. Students will be expected to complete agility tests. This is a co-ed class.
Note: Advanced Weight Training may be repeated for the additional credit.
HEALTH AND ATHLETIC TRAINING CLASSES
H6500 HEALTH AND FAMILY EDUCATION

Health is a one-semester class that is required of all WGHS students for graduation. The course can be thought of as a life management class in that an emphasis will be placed on how decisions, actions, and lifestyle choices during teen years can affect a person’s adult life. Topics to be covered include basic anatomy and understanding of body systems, physical fitness, nutrition; tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs including vaping; disease prevention and control, including STDs and HIV; healthy relationships, including family, dating, and peer relationships; first aid and CPR training; and stress management, mental health information, and even study skills. The CPR training in this class will satisfy a Missouri graduation requirement.
Note: This course is required for graduation.
H6855 INTRODUCTION TO ATHLETIC TRAINING

Recommendation: Students who have earned a C or higher in Health have experienced an appropriate yet challenging placement in this course.

Introduction to Athletic Training is a one-semester course open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in allied health professions, specifically athletic training, coaching, or their personal health while being physically active. This course will provide class work and practical hands-on application in the following areas: evaluation of sports injuries; prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries; taping and wrapping of injuries; first aid and CPR; emergency procedures; medical terminology; anatomy and physiology; fitness conditioning and strength programs; and sports medicine careers. Opportunities to earn Honors grades are given each semester.
Note: This course counts as an elective physical education credit only and does not meet any physical education requirements needed for graduation. Outside participation will be required for this course.
H6856 ADVANCED ATHLETIC TRAINING

Advanced Athletic Training is a one-semester course open to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors interested in a future career in an allied health profession, specifically athletic training, physical therapy, and sports medicine. The purpose of this course is to build on previous knowledge and apply advanced class work to practical hands-on application in athletic training. This class is designed to provide advanced study for students who are highly motivated to discuss and evaluate sports injuries and learn how to prevent, treat, and rehabilitate sports injuries. Students interested in this course will work closely with the WGHS athletic teams and will have a future advantage when applying to an accredited athletic training college program. Opportunities to earn Honors grades are given each semester.

The AT Internship is a semester-long experiential learning course designed to provide individual learning and growth involving a future career in medicine. The internship is guided by practical hours, reflective assignments, and a major project based on the student's interests. All internships must be approved in advance.
