5990 FUNDAMENTALS OF MATH
Credit: 1 unit Math
Open to Grades: 9-12
This course focuses on applying basic math skills to daily living. The four basic operations, fractions, decimals and percents are all reviewed and utilized in topics including shopping, banking, writing budgets, measuring and others. Pre-Algebra and Geometry skills will also be introduced/strengthened. The content of the high school curriculum will be modified in order to ensure the success of students who put forth effort.
3990 FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGLISH I
Credit: 1 unit English
Open to Grade 9
Fundamentals of English I consists of instruction in writing, reading, grammar, speaking/listening, research and vocabulary development. Students will learn strategies that will enable them to decode and comprehend fiction and nonfiction. Vocabulary study draws from the literature or from word lists appropriate for 9th graders. Writing instruction focuses on strengthening the paragraph and develops into careful building of the essay and the grade-specific I Search paper. Mechanics and usage, vocabulary, spelling, and oral communication are emphasized.
3991 FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGLISH II
Credit: 1 unit English
Open to Grade 10
Fundamentals of English II consists of instruction in composition, reading fiction and informational text, grammar, speaking/listening, research and vocabulary development in world literature. Strategies for improving comprehension of fiction and informational texts will be stressed. Vocabulary study is an integral part of the course and is aligned with the literature or from word lists appropriate for this grade level. Students improve their linguistic and analytical skills by interpreting literature in terms of such elements as theme, characterization, structure, symbolism, irony, and figurative language. Equal emphasis is placed on the writing process, particularly sentence structure, paragraph organization and development, diction, and mechanics.
3994 FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGLISH III
Credit: 1 unit English
Open to Grade 11
Fundamentals of English III continues to expand and reinforce the student’s skills of analysis and evaluation of literature, writing, vocabulary, research, and speaking and listening. Through reading fiction, information text, drama, and poetry, students will examine the changing nature of the American Dream and how it pervades American Literature. Key writing concepts include thorough knowledge of the writing process, organizational structure, and grammatical conventions. Students will use literary criticism to write argumentative essays. In addition, students will complete narrative and informative pieces.
3996 FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGLISH IV
Credit: 1 unit English
Open to Grade 12
This year-long course prepares students for post-secondary opportunities. Students strengthen their critical thinking skills by exploring contemporary readings, composing formal papers, and practicing revisions and rewriting. Key texts for this class include reading selections along with focused exercises in editing, refining sentence structure, and drafting coherent paragraphs and essays. Weekly vocabulary study involves learning Latin, Greek and French word parts with English derivations.
3050 FUNDAMENTALS OF READING
Credit: 1 unit English
Open to Grades: 9-12
This course directly and systematically teaches students how to accurately decode and encode. The program engages students through interactive and multisensory instruction. Total word construction, as well as phonics, is emphasized. A placement assessment and teacher recommendation is used to determine appropriate instruction level.

The Social Skills classroom is a Special Education and a Tier 3 intervention for students with mental health issues that have symptoms that impact their academic/social performance and progress in a general education curriculum/setting. The goals of the Social Skills class are to teach social-emotional learning skills to students with Social, Emotional and Behavioral and/or Mental Health concerns so they can succeed in their home school (the least restrictive environment) and connect the students and their families to and coordinate with community support. The following direct instruction curriculum is addressed: social skills, emotional and behavioral regulation skills, resiliency skills, coping skills, anger management, problem solving, decision making, and developmental assets.

This course is designed to help students learn to cope with a variety of issues in their lives, such as developing friendships, showing self-control, communicating appropriately, solving problems, and making moral judgments. The small class size allows individuals to discuss difficulties that they are having in the high school environment, and work together to come up with solutions that are socially acceptable. Students will be graded on class participation and accomplishing individual goals.
7992 FUNCTIONAL SCIENCE

Open to Grades: 9-12
Students will be placed in this course based upon previous assessments and individualized education goals. Students will meet the rigor outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards through standards-based content in the areas of Earth and Space Science, Life Science (Biology), and Physical Science. Students will learn the practical knowledge in science that they will need to succeed in the real world.

A placement assessment is used to properly place students into this course. Learners build foundational skills and master concepts related to activities of daily living. Topics include Counting and Cardinality, Numbers and Operations, Fractions, Time and Money, Measurement, Data and Graphing, Geometry, Algebra, Functions, and Ratios and Proportional Relationships.
3122 FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
Credit: 1 unit elective
Open to Grades: 9-12
Students will complete a pre-test to determine academic strengths and areas for improvement. Curriculum is based on state ELA extended standards in the areas of Phonological Awareness, Comprehension, Phonics, Vocabulary, Word Recognition, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas, Fluency, Range and Text Complexity, Key Ideas and Details, Print Concepts, Craft and Structure, and Production and Distribution of Writing. Individualized lessons will then be created to address needs in basic skill areas that have not been mastered. Students will learn the practical knowledge in language arts that they will need to succeed in the real world.
8997 FUNCTIONAL SOCIAL STUDIES
Credit: 1 unit Social Studies
Open to Grades: 9-12
Students will be provided with the understanding needed to become contributing members of their community and society. Student experiences will include self-management and safety within the community, interpersonal skills, career awareness, critical thinking, reading environmental print, navigating the community, reading schedules, current events and citizenship. There will also be an emphasis placed on using a variety of services and organizations to promote independent living skills.
0070 VOCATIONAL SKILLS I
Credit: 1 unit elective
Open to Grades: 9-12
Designed for students who are beginning their journey towards the world of employment, they will learn the skills necessary for the world of work through a focus on pre-employment skills. The program is individualized and may include role playing of appropriate job behaviors/skills, on-the-job training, filling out forms, and career interest inventories. Students will perform on-the-job training at various high school campus locations. Students can perform work tasks designed to practice work skills and social skills in a real work setting.
0071 VOCATIONAL SKILLS II
Credit: 1 unit elective
Prerequisite: Recommendation of SSD case manager
Open to Grades: 10-12
Designed for students that have had some exposure to a volunteer job role, students will learn the skills necessary for the world of work. Students will learn the practical knowledge in job skills that they will need to succeed in the real world. Areas that will be covered include: exploring career options, filling out applications, developing a resume and cover letter, interviewing, and developing appropriate work habits. Students will utilize the skills learned in class to work in various jobs in the WGHS environment.
0072 COMMUNITY BASED VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTION I
Credit: 1 unit elective
Open to Grades: 10-12
Designed for juniors and seniors, students will further develop job skills in a community-based work environment. This is a 2-hour block of time in which students will participate in classroom instruction as well as taking on a volunteer job experience in the community.
0073 COMMUNITY BASED VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTION II
Credit: 1 unit elective
Open to Grades: 10-12
Designed for seniors with some level of independence at a simulated work site, students will further develop job skills in a community-based work environment. This is a 3-hour block of time in which students will participate in classroom instruction as well as taking on a volunteer job experience in the community. Students have to interview for this position. Students are required to have a Tuberculosis test, an influenza vaccine and a COVID-19 vaccine (unless they have a medical or religious waiver).
